Supernatural seventh-graders forge their own path to stardom… but stardom has its costs! Liska, Ephy, and Airin are thrilled to finally attend their dream school, Eclipse Arts, where they can let their talents and passions shine…there’s just one big problem: their families. Ephy’s family wants her to become an instant star, while Liska’s passion for music clashes with her family’s reputation. In singing, Airin finds relief from a terrible family curse. But when a stunning opening ceremony cements their dreams, Liska, Ephy, and Airin band together and set their sights on winning the quad talent show. But their families and competition, fellow classmate Oliver, would do anything to stop them from winning, especially Airin. Eclipse Arts is a cozy middle grade fantasy for ages 8 to 12.
Reviews
The most terrifying villains in Chastaine’s middle-grade, paranormal, high school musical tale are the over-demanding parents. Three 12-year-olds rooming together in the Zephyr Suite dorm navigate entering 7th grade at Eclipse Supernatural School for the Arts in Georgia, each torn between upholding family reputations and growing into the person they want to become. Liska, a cocoa-skinned fox shifter, wants to study music, but her combative father demands she study the family’s art: dance. Ephy, a tan-skinned light bender and demi-god, has convinced her reality show obsessed mother to let her transfer to Eclipse to study drama. The quiet and placid Airin, a pale, genderless banshee with white hair, likes to sing, but their stay at Eclipse is at the whim of the witch Darklighter family—and Airin’s family is bound in servitude to the Darklighters to provide them with magical power.

Chastaine, in a lively debut, captures the real-life apprehension, doubts, and bullies of middle school, with a dash of magic. Spoiled brat reprobate Oliver Darklighter makes Airin’s life miserable, and Bellona, niece of the principal, lords over the other students. To show off their talents and prove to themselves and their parents who they really are, the students participate in Eclipse Art’s talent show contest. Ephy feels Zephyr Suite has to win to please her mother, while Airin can’t best Oliver’s team or he’ll have Airin kicked out of school.

The slick world building, diverse students, and performing arts atmosphere offers young readers a chance to see themselves reflected in the challenges of following your dreams and growing up. The leisurely plot builds up the hopeful and persistent characters who confront their parents’ preoccupation with status and fame to work out their own problems together in friendship. This is an optimistic story for young readers, and a charming adventure in growing up, showing the world your gifts, and triumphing over bullies and overbearing parents.

Takeaway: Charming magic school story of friends, finding yourself, and a talent show.
