Emily’s Alaska Adventure Climbing Denali
denise saigh, author
My book is unique, because unlike current children’s climbing books that just tell about the climber’s experiences, my book includes children in the process of the climb, by showing not telling. With an increasing focus on increasing children’s outdoor activities, I filled this gap in Emily’s 5th grade classroom. Emily and I expose her classmates the food, clothes and gear needed to survive in summitting Denali’s 20,310’ Mountain. The children get to wear climbing harnesses, play with prusiks, carabiners, jumars, put up a tent, crawl inside a sleeping bag, try on climbing clothes and see real pictures of glaciers, crevasses, and avalanches. This story is set in Anchorage, Alaska and on Denali Mountain and runs about 8,000 words with real pictures of both Emily’s and Denise’s climbs. I believe my book will attract a wide audience of parents who want their children to experience the Alaska wilderness. My book actually brings the children on the mountain while I climb. My next children’s books are on dog mushing, scuba diving and kayaking in Alaska.
