Positive 4 stars (out of 5) from the Editor-in-Chief of SFBR.
Eye for an I is book eight in the Retimer series, but is entry-level enough to be read as a standalone. Protagonist Luthan Fennes, also known as the "Retimer," is an Australian secret counter-intelligence officer in the model of James Bond, including high-stakes confrontations with rogue states and terror organizations. In Eye for an I, the G20 summit is being held in Australia, and Fennes is called home to help protect the politicians and corporations participating. The growth of the funds held in offshore banking havens is becoming an increasingly visible target both for protesters and terrorists interested in destabilizing the status quo, and the summit is the latest high profile target for both.
The twists and turns of the plot follow the classic James Bond, slightly outrageous, larger than life heroes and villains, fast cars, close calls, and plenty of guns and fights. Angliss keeps the action flowing with some back story here and there to flesh out previous stories or new characters, but, overall, is focused on driving the plot forward... As modern pulp fiction, the Retimer series is entertaining and keeps you guessing through to the end. The back story presented is a good encouragement for readers to seek out the earlier books in the series to see what brought Fennes to Eye for an I. -- Ross Rojek, Editor-in-Chief and Co-Publisher, San Francisco Book Review
