Fearless Duke
Miss Isabella Hilgrove, proprietress of the Ladies’ Typewriting School, prides herself on the quality of her staff. After the Duke of Westmorland sacks the third typist she has sent him in as many days, she’s not just outraged, she’s determined to put the arrogant bully in his place. Benedict Manning, Duke of Westmorland, is having the worst few weeks of his life. A bomb has exploded on London Bridge, the Special League is unraveling, and he cannot seem to find a secretary who is not a spineless watering pot. When the prim and proper Miss Hilgrove arrives on his doorstep, calling him everything but a gentleman, he can’t resist toying with her. Their mutual attempts to teach each other a lesson quickly turn into something more. But danger is in the air, and the brooding duke and the self-avowed spinster are about to become targets of the most lethal menace London has faced…
Reviews
Scott’s final League of Dukes romance (after Scandalous Duke) unites a haughty duke with the headstrong woman he hires as a typist in 1885 London. The pair meet when Isabella Hilgrove, owner of the Ladies’ Typewriting School, demands that Benedict Manning, Duke of Westmorland, apologize for his baseless dismissal of a string of typists she previously sent to him and write a formal endorsement of her school in the Times. Benedict agrees, but only if Isabella will personally act as his typist for the next week, transcribing his reports for the Home Office. Benedict is quickly impressed by her skill and beauty—but when their mutual attraction culminates in a kiss, Isabella cuts their working relationship short for fear of damaging her school’s reputation. Unfortunately, Isabella’s work for Benedict draws the attention of a terrorist group, and after they target her, Benedict proposes she move into his residence where he can protect her. The chemistry and romantic angst between the characters only enhance the eventual sensuous love scenes, while the suspense elements keep the pages turning. Historical fiction fans will especially admire Isabella’s fight to maintain her independence while falling in love with a man above her station. This is sure to please. (Self-published)
