Forgotten Oath
Noah didn’t believe in the Old Hawaiian ways. But when at the cemetery on a school service project a voice calls Noah and he is whisked away to 1834 Hilo where he meets Lopaka, a young Hawaiian guide accused of murdering David Douglas. While in the past, Noah learns the “Kekoa Family Curse” is true, and that he must fulfill his oath to save Lopaka from hanging, or he will die the same day and his grandfather’s spirit will never rest. Noah tricks Lopaka into sending him back to the present, where he tells Blaise what happened, including his decision never to return to the past. Blaise calls him a coward and in an irrational reaction, Noah sends himself back to 1834. During this second trip, Noah witnesses Ned Finn, a hunter, murder David Douglas and he recognizes him as a homeless man from the cemetery at home. He travels back to ask Blaise for help. Noah and Blaise discover that their grandfather had taken four-year-old Noah to the dump, looking for a Volkswagen hubcap when the Night Marchers crossed their path and Noah looked up at a Marcher—an act punishable by death. When they exit the cemetery archive after searching for evidence, Finn (the homeless man) tells Noah that all he saw in the past was Lopaka’s false story and warns him not to return to the past. Noah and Blaise attempt to return to the past together but only Noah succeeds. While on this trip, he almost dies twice, and Lopaka and Papa release Noah from the oath and send him home and he is unable to travel back to help. Noah’s uncle suggests they try the Old Hawaiian ways to contact the Night Marcher. Noah reluctantly agrees and is able to return to the past where he is assaulted by Finn but Noah and Lopaka prove Finn’s guilt. Lopaka is absolved, and Noah’s grandfather can rest in peace. Noah has fulfilled his promise. One day, while cleaning Lopaka’s headstone after school Blaise and Noah find a Volkswagen hubcap leaning against it.
