Skylar lives the first 14 years of her life as a normal girl with nothing but little quirks or traits that hint to her being anything more, until she finds herself kidnapped by the Cloaked Magicians on the last day of middle school. While in their prison, sharing a cell with a giant talking dog named Rust, she learns she is from a family of powerful magicians, born in the underground city of the Ghost Council, where the dead walk with the living. She is offered a place in the Cloaked Magician city by Marco, their leader. Not having much of a choice, she accepts only to plot an escape plan with his son, Zack. They risk their necks escaping and seek refuge at the Ghost Council, where Skylar still struggles to grasp her newly discovered powers.
