Ran Ernst, author

Middle Grade; Mystery/Thriller; (Publish)

10-year-old Franklin Stein lives in the mysterious town of Hauntsville and attends Graveyard Elementary, where ghouls, witches, mummies, and monsters study side by side. Franklin wants to feel big and scary like his father. But his shortcomings are just that, he’s short for his age. He’s not feared by but rather laughed at from fellow classmates. When walking to school Franklin is dared by his friend Hunter to enter the spooky abandon mausoleum in the graveyard. He wants to prove he’s brave, so he reluctantly enters. He stumbles upon a golden pyramid-shaped locked box rumored to hold the elusive “Crimson Claw.” While inside he encounters Mumford the mummy and they both embark on a quest to uncover its mysterious past. At school, Franklin learns of the powers of the Claw inside the box from his history teacher Professor Survious, he enlists his friends to help decipher the secret code to unlock it. But when opened, Franklin’s little sister Lily a social media addicted wee-witch and her six-foot-tall pet spider Ziggy, suddenly vanish into thin air. Desperate to find them before it’s too late, Franklin along with the help of his friends, Hunter the always-hungry werewolf, Mumford the asthmatic mummy, and Lily’s best friend Abby the genius yet socially challenged zombie girl, set out to solve the mystery. As the young adventurers decode riddles and navigate secret societies, their discoveries lead them to encounter a peculiar character named Ozmo. A ghost from another dimension, a fifth cardinal point called the Core. Ozmo explains to Franklin where Lily and Ziggy were teleported to and how they can’t survive very long in this dimension of spirits. Additionally, it’s urgent that they rescue them before the Guardians of the Core, a secret society of spirits that are watchmen tasked to protect the Claw at all costs, are alerted. The Guardians created the lock box to safeguard the Claw from getting into the wrong hands. It’s powers too dangerous for anyone to command. The box was special. It was designed to awaken and activate a homing signal to the Guardians and teleport those who possessed it back to the Core so they could retrieve the stolen Claw and capture its thief. The next day, the gang is searching the house for their missing friends when Abby notices the glowing Claw on Franklins nightstand. She’s always losing body parts; notices she’s missing a finger and mindlessly attaches the clawed finger to her own hand. Meanwhile back in the Hauntsville graveyard, Voodoo an angry voodoo doll and his side-kick snake Chopper, a pair of bumbling thieves, have their eyes set on stealing the Claw for themselves. They set in motion a plan to steal the Claw, but mistakenly snatch Abbys finger setting the stage for a mixed-up thrilling pursuit. But dark forces are at play, and someone else may be pulling the strings to possess the Crimson Claw and exploit its powers for sinister purposes. Franklins journey takes him to the enigmatic Ms. Houdini, the witchcraft and spells teacher who may hold the key to unlocking the portal into this alternate dimension that swallowed Lily and Ziggy. In exchange for her assistance, she demands the Claw, a powerful and elusive artifact that give the beholder the power of perception. Franklin faces a dilemma as he must decide whether to trust her with the Claw to save his sister or keep the Claw’s powers for his own gains. As the friends gather outside Graveyard Elementary, Ms. Houdini creates a spell meant to open a portal connecting their dimension to the one Lily and Ziggy are trapped. Amid the incantation, a portal begins to form, crackling with electric energy. However, the portal begins to shrink when Ms. Houdini discovers they don’t have the Claw with them. It’s a race against time to retrieve the missing Claw from Franklin’s house, or the portal may close before reuniting Lily and Ziggy with their friends. This is when Abby steps up and reveals she has the Claw and gives it to Franklin. Franklin pleads with Ms. Houdini to not reverse the portal and she can have the Claw. He tosses it too close to the spinning vortex and Ms. Houdini lunges for the artifact. In a surprising twist, Carl, a seemingly innocent stone gargoyle atop the school bell tower, swoops down tackling Ms. Houdini knocking her into the shrinking portal. He reveals that he was once the headmaster at the school and Ms. Houdini had cursed him into becoming a gargoyle. With her vanishing into the portal, the portal closes, leaving her trapped inside the Core. Carl’s curse is lifted. The kids rush back home, hoping Lily and Ziggy were able to return through the portal. But sadly, only Lily was able to safely return before the portal collapsed. Tearfully the friends wonder about Ziggy’s fate trapped inside the Core. Later, back inside the Core, Ozmo contacts Lily through her phone and explains that the Guardians have caught Ms. Houdini. As part of a deal, they have agreed to return Ziggy back to their world, but in exchange, the Claw must be returned. The agreement offers hope of Ziggy’s return and signals a semblance of justice for Ms. Houdini. With the Claw returned and Ziggy back home, the friends celebrate their triumph over the supernatural forces that had threatened their town. All except Voodoo and Chopper, who confront Abby, accusing her of intentionally stealing the Claw leaving her finger instead. However, Abby’s simple “Better…run” response and Hunters insatiable obsession to shred apart what he thinks is a chew toy, Voodoo, sends the bumbling thieves running for their lives. In the end, Hauntsville returns to its mysterious but peaceful ways, and friends are forever bound by their shared adventure. As they part ways, the memory of their journey and the lasting bonds formed among the group will always remind them of the otherworldly wonder hidden beneath the surface of their sleepy little town.
