Have just finished reading Hidden Disabilities and Conditions by Ted Smith. What a great read - having a mostly hidden condition myself I consider myself to be more aware than most of how it feels and how I can support as part of HR. This book gave me so much more for my toolkit. If you read nothing else this year read this.
Great contributions from real people who know what it’s like and even includes some very interesting facts about bias in recruitment that I’m willing to bet most people wouldn’t recognise.
A worthwhile addition to your HR library - guarantee you’ll use it more than your other reference books

I didnt know what to expect when I got the book and I confess at being quite skeptical when it comes to books offering help and advice on inclusivity, but this book has completely changed my perceptions and my approach. It is beautifully written, with compassion and sensitivity and as if Ted is there talking you through the condition and then offering you great advice as to how to help the person with the disability and get the most out of them. It is a book teaching us about compassion through understanding. Written by a person not a preacher. To top it all, all profits go to the Macmillan Cancer Support charity - what is there not to like!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inclusion in the workplace explained - a manager’s must have guide

The author speaks from many years of HR experience in companies large and small, and as an employee I was fortunate to have had the benefit of his insight. Here, he makes the business case for creating an inclusive workplace for those who have, or become diagnosed with, hidden medical problems. This is not only because it’s the “right thing” to do, but because not doing so will hurt the bottom line in the end. The list of conditions is so comprehensive, gathered from many interviews. If you are leading a team of 6 or more, it’s highly likely you are already knowingly or unknowingly dealing some of their consequences. Get educated so you are better placed to make adjustments to the workplace as needed and see overall productivity increase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Disabilities and Conditions: Creating an Inclusive Workplace by Ted Smith
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 November 2021
This riveting and easy to follow book is a must have read for not only organisations but individuals who wish to create inclusivity for all. The author, Ted, provides a voice for those who face challenges in their day to day lives, he then offers practical guidance for employers on ways in which they can create supportive and inclusive environments. Ted’s invaluable advice raises awareness and creates an educational tool kit which is not only applicable for the workplace but can be equally beneficial for personal and academic growth.
The book covers a vast range of hidden disabilities and conditions, all of which can or have taken years to detect and have resulted in unnecessary suffering for many. To redress this, Ted has written his not-for-profit book, with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support, highlighting he simply cares about everyone and has used this platform to promote awareness whilst supporting an amazing charity, which makes him a very kind gentleman and a remarkable human being.
I totally recommend ‘Hidden Disabilities and Conditions: Creating an Inclusive Workplace’ as a book that will assist in varying aspects of life whilst fundraising for a very worthy cause, kudos to Ted 😊

5.0 out of 5 stars A book about accessibility that is the model of accessibility
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 November 2021
This book uses stories of real people to explain different conditions and disabilities. This human touch makes it very different to a classic HR book. The way Ted uses case studies to look at the effect on the individual and what they and their employer can do is hugely insightful. It is making me rethink how I ask questions of new joiners so that I can be aware of any adjustments I can make to help them thrive in the workplace. As a result of the book several colleagues opened up about issues such as dyslexia. I have realised that my obsession with spelling needs to be tempered by an understanding that not everyone sees words in the same way. There was a surprising aspect to this book. It gives many suggestions and tips to the employee on managing their condition. It is as you would expect from someone of TEds experience thoroughly researched, clear and well referenced. The cover is by someone with autism and this book helps us to see how challenges affect other people’s daily lives and some of the small steps that could make a huge impact on the quality of their life and their contribution to the workplace.

This is great for either HR or Ops Managers who have team members with hidden disabilities, or those who just want to know more about being inclusive. HR folks often feel like they are expected to know everything and they will certainly feel more like they do with this in their library!
