Publisher's Weekly

This second installment in the I Escaped! series centers on the deadly November 2018 Butte County, Calif., wildfires, following the fictional Benson siblings as their night sans supervision turns dire. When their parents leave for an overnight workshop in nearby Redding, 14-year-old Troy is excited to be in charge of his younger sister, Emma; their cat, Midnight; and their German shepherd, Rascal. But after they wake to an electrical blackout and stifling darkness the next morning, it becomes apparent that something is wrong. What follows is a close account of Troy and Emma’s escape from Paradise, Calif. A map of the Camp Fire’s range, photos interspersed throughout, and chapters divided by date and time lend immediacy to Troy and Emma’s journey. Scenes detailing the extent of the fire’s damage, as well as introspective looks at how people coped, resonate, and the authors capably capture the voice of a stressed but nevertheless resourceful Boy Scout, set on looking after his family and their panicking and misguided neighbors. Occasionally sensationalist in tone, this fast-paced read nevertheless provides a harrowing look into a contemporary disaster. Back matter includes a link to a study guide, a timeline, contextual facts, and resources for natural disaster relief and emergency procedures. Ages 8–12.
