Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

Stumbling in the dark of an unfinished tomb beneath the sands of Saqqara, American tourist Tim Hope unknowingly passes through a time portal that leads to ancient Egypt. When he discovers that two other Americans preceded him through the time portal, Tim immerses himself in the ancient world to search for them. As he becomes more comfortable with the simpler, more immediate land, he finds himself irresistibly attracted to the delicate Meryt, a wbt-priestess for the god Re. Learning that a seven-year famine has led to a plot to overthrow King Djoser, Tim discovers that his fate, the lives of the two Americans and the future of Egypt rest in the hands of the legendary Imhotep, master architect of the Step Pyramid, renowned physician and intimate adviser to King Djoser.

Dubs’s exciting debut and series launch brings to life the political intrigue of ancient Egypt through the stories of time-traveling American tourists. Artist Tim Hope is in Egypt with plans to spend his vacation sketching his surroundings and recovering from a lost love, until he witnesses two other Americans, Brian Aldwin and Diane Maclaine, disappearing into Kanakht’s tomb. Tim follows them and finds they’ve all been thrown back 5,000 years into “Ineb-Hedj,” in the days of King Djoser and Imhotep. When the three emerge from the tomb, they’re viewed as gods, but corrupt priests and suspicious royalty are not easily convinced they are deities. Tim, Brian, and Diane try to adapt to this different way of life that includes plenty of public nakedness and sexual encounters. They also face attempts on their lives, portrayed in intense action scenes, find love interests, and wonder how—and whether—they will return home. The characters are skillfully developed, and Dubs particularly impresses with his descriptions of life in ancient Egypt. This series is off to a great start. (Self-published)

The book was so capturing that I hated putting it down to do other things. I have to say very few books have caught my interest like this book and I highly recommend it to all readers. It is a long book over 600 pages but it will keep your interest and attention often at the edge of your seat. The book is about survival and acceptance of the new environment they were fortuitously drawn into.

In this historical thriller, three Americans find themselves transported to ancient Egypt and thrust into the political intrigue of the day … While the undergirding premise of the plot is wildly fantastical, the author has a peculiar talent for rendering the implausible in credible terms. In addition, the depiction of ancient Egypt is masterly executed, both authentic and accessible ... But the real draw of the book is its characters, especially Tim, drawn in lushly substantive terms … An intelligently constructed and exciting peek into the distant past.

In this historical thriller, three Americans find themselves transported to ancient Egypt and thrust into the political intrigue of the day.

Tim Hope is an American tourist trekking through Egypt forlornly, anguished over the death of his fiancee. Two Americans he's befriended wander off to explore the Tomb of Kanakht and mysteriously disappear. Concerned for their safety, Tim searches for the couple, Brian Aldwin and Diane Maclaine, but instead unwittingly steps through some sort of portal and travels back in time 5,000 years to an Egypt before the pyramids and the age of Moses. Tim discovers that Brian and Diane stumbled into the portal as well, and all three are suspected by some to be gods, a perception reinforced by heroic deeds performed by Brian and Tim. Problematically, the world they now inhabit, Kemet or The Two Lands, is rife with intramural conflict. After suffering seven years of a devastating famine, King Djoser's reign is threatened by secret rivals, including those close to him who claim loyalty. Further, Tim's and Brian's lives are menaced by political forces that fear their popularity with the people, the consequence of feats of bravery and compassion. Tim, adopting the name and role of a famous architect and adviser to the king, Imhotep, risks his life to properly direct the course of history. Meanwhile, all three Americans are drawn to this unfamiliar way of life and have to decide if they wish to remain indefinitely or—if they can figure out how—return to the future. This is the first installment of a four-part series by Dubs (Vagabond Retirement, 2017, etc.). While the undergirding premise of the plot is wildly fantastical, the author has a peculiar talent for rendering the implausible in credible terms. In addition, the depiction of ancient Egypt is masterly executed, both authentic and accessible, with the narrative including Tim's descriptions of the landscape ("He saw in the distance the green of the Nile's valley, richer and darker and fuller than he remembered it. And along the river, rising from its banks he saw a city of mud brick homes surrounded by a thick white wall: The long-dead city that Tim knew as Memphis"). But the real draw of the book is its characters, especially Tim, drawn in lushly substantive terms.

An intelligently constructed and exciting peek into the distant past.

I did not think that I would like this book. I actually LOVED this book and was sad when I finished it . The story kept me captivated! It was really exciting wondering what would happen. This book was a real page turner! The plot was intriguing and the characters were compelling .

This has got to be one of the best books I have read in the last 6 months or so. It takes 3 tourists who are touring Egypt and wander into a tomb closed to the public and they go down a hallway, turn a corner, push a door open and step out into Egypt of 5000 years ago. No wait- this is not reality. Sit back and let imagination and a worderfully talented writer take you back into time and give you a vision of life in the time of King Djoser. Live with the Egyptians, dress as they do, learn the language, experience the lifestyle both good and bad. This book has everything, adventure, love, friendship, changing lifestyles and a totally different pace of time. I loved every second of this book and hated to see it end.
