Young Vidarr Allefar is estranged from his d'oglemann kin. Seventeen years ago, his egg arrived in Tyrrby, the home of Warriors for Tyrrell, who serve the God of Justice. He grows up learning martial arts. Upon attaining rank, he is tasked with the retrieval of a famed swordsman turned murderer, who is said to know magic. Vidarr sets out on his quest and meets Rory Belkin, a hunter on the woodsman path, and Ingefaer vod Renku, an Aere Warrior. Through a series of encounters with beasts and brigands, they develop respect for one another. Upon attaining his eighteenth birthday, Vidarr discovers he has empath powers. He also sees fylgjae, sparkling spirits that warn him of danger. After much searching and some troubles in the city of Hjulstadt, Vidarr captures the criminal. He also finds a magical necklace belonging to Jarl Toggranson, the head of the Legion, a military sect in the city. When Vidarr returns the necklace, but the Jarl insults him because of his d’oglemann nature. Vidarr loses control over his mouth. The situation is brought under control without blood spilling and Vidarr sets out to find information about his kin, hoping to return home. However, Jarl Toggranson sees things differently, and has Vidarr arrested. The climax occurs in the Legion jail, where Vidarr must fend off several assailants before his friends and his Order come to his rescue.
