This Apple Didn't Fall, She Flew:by Mark WellsThis story is a profound and epic journey, told with such preternatural humility, gentle humor, and the intrepid innocence and grace of Apple An, a young woman who welcomes challenging experiences and intimidating encounters. The fun and charm of the story is the author’s approach to taking us along for the ride. There is a shade of Lewis Carroll in the unfolding. As Apple tries to make sense of the new culture, language, and, literal, lay of the land, the western reader is treated to an alien introduction to that which is so familiar, that we take it for granted. One small charming example is the approach to peeling and eating a grapefruit. Echoes of that childlike curiosity and questioning and observing throughout the book make this such an appealing read. Another example is how Apple is so taken with Professor Parry's thick, dark beard. The backdrop of this story is so poignant and compelling, and the intellectual pursuits that drive Apple’s passion, and inform her courage, are beyond the reach of many. But this is a book about a young woman with a passion who dares to pursue her climb to the summit of success by first landing herself in a world where everything is unfamiliar, needing to be scrupulously assimilated while mastering her ostensible discipline. Such a one as that can still get nervous driving a standard shift, be enthralled by Rambo and Rocky, and fall in love with a man who showed that "thought and effort count," only to find disappointment when the lover's character exhausted such display. This is a story about a bright, potential-laden, young lady whose unwavering humanity is the quality that makes this such an enjoyable read; and in how this Apple's story holds a reflection up to all of us that makes this a powerful read as well.As I was reading the story, I could hear Apple’s voice and see your her expressions, I was giddy, and excited, and I hung on to your her every word. I chuckled aloud several times.I like how the book ends, because it doesn't really. That leg of the sojourn has passed. Readers and fans are aware of those answers. But just like watching 1776, or a Rocky movie for the zillionth time as I do, too, knowing what happens is good and has value, even a sense of comfort. The greater joy of reading further (or re-reading this book) is in savoring Apple’s telling of the experience. As Apple learns things about American culture and customs, we are reintroduced to our own character and patterns. Voicing the story of adapting, assimilating and achieving happens to hold a mirror to western cultural physiognomy that is both elucidating, and entertaining. There is a mutual fascination, that vacillates between emulation and distrust. It is the impeccable humility of the story's voicing that disarms, enchants, and makes us all want to know you Apple more!

Apple An's memoir is truly inspiring! She shares her experiences of leaving her home country of China and starting a new life in the United States. Her way of writing gives you the impression that she is there with you, taking you easily within every moment she describes. Throughout the book, Apple An reflects on her experiences and shares stories of cultural differences, as well as community support, perseverance, and glimpses of her life back in China. I think her memoir serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of immigrants, but most importantly, she reminds us of what it is like to be human and connect with people. I laughed, was shocked, humbled, pleased and intrigued as I was following her peregrinations through her first few months in America. It reminded me of the so many situations that were new to me and that I experienced as a beginner. So even though I am not an immigrant, I recognized myself at some levels in some situations. And I think this is what makes this book great: the story Apple An is telling is a human story, and no matter what your background is, you will certainly feel connected to her in one way or another. I truly believe it is a must-read: it is the story of the resilience and determination of an inspiring woman (and through her the story of many immigrants), but it also offers hope and inspiration to anyone facing adversity. And more importantly, it gives people who want to share a human connection a way to do so with a beautiful soul. I cannot wait for a second book! Hope it comes soon!
