It is 2050 and American society has become dominated by the Omniverse, an all-encompassing virtual reality in which people live out much of their waking hours. When a small atomic bomb is detonated in rural Idaho and no one takes responsibility, demagogues and other sinister opportunists use the Omniverse to fill the information gap with a overwhelming wave of disinformation, dividing society into three warring factions. It is in this world that we meet New high school graduate Jonah Boat. He has a brain condition that renders neural interface with the Omniverse impossible and enables him to see the real world for what it is. When his beloved father dies, Jonah inherits his bakery, which has been absorbed by the Omni Corporation as one of the thousands of venues providing access to the Omniverse. A beautiful young woman gets him involved in an underground rebel group set on destroying the Omni Corporation and putting an end to Omniverse's grip on America. However, just as he is about to participate in a plot to destroy Omni Corporation once and for all, he is arrested and placed into a gulag-style prison. When he is released after months of torture, he is forced to work as a spy against the rebels or his family will be harmed. Will Jonah succeed in overcoming the Omni Corporation's grip on his life or will his final failure be to betray the only people who can save America?
