M is for Money
Rob Phelan, author
Raise your hand if you have ever felt embarrassed, guilty, awkward, or uncomfortable talking to someone about money? I know my hand is raised! We live in a society where money is placed alongside politics and religion when it comes to the level of appropriateness to bring up in conversation. This is why many adults report feeling shame or embarrassment around their finances, and don't ask questions or seek help when they don't understand something or need help. M is for Money is changing that narrative by helping the part of our population who have not yet absorbed these societal practices and are open to new ideas... Kids! Home and school are where the majority of a child's beliefs and values are formed, and books play a large part in that process. M is for Money is an ABC's of money book which introduces 3-8 year-old children to age-appropriate money words and normalizes conversations about money between family and friends.

M is for Money by Rob Phelan cleverly introduces financial concepts to young children. There are multiple layers to the book. It is set up like an alphabet book with one word and definition per page. There is also a narrative aspect and an interactive component. The words range from concrete items like dollar and bank to concepts like earn and need. After they are defined there is a little story that provides a concrete example of the word. Stash the Squirrel appears on each page and asks a question that applies to the concept to solidify the definition for kids. At the end of the book, multiple suggestions are given to help parents and teachers use the book with a wide range of kids.

Financial concepts are not often found in books for young children. Rob Phelan has done a remarkable job in putting together a highly accessible and very useful introduction to money for young children. As a former children's librarian, I can attest to the fact that there are very few engaging books about money for children. The illustrations by FX and Color Studio are attractive and depict a diverse group of people. Kids will love looking for Stash the Squirrel on each page! M is for Money is a book that both parents and teachers will appreciate. The concepts and activities provide a good introduction that will open the way for deeper conversations about financial decisions as kids grow up. M is for Money is a book that I highly recommend!

The Children's Book Review
