Make it Short, Make it Simple by Luis Rousset is the story of Alan Leary, a detective from New York who goes to Macae, Rio de Janeiro to investigate the sudden death of an engineer. Once he gets there, he realizes that this case is not what it seems. Once a fishing village, the place saw a sudden upsurge and now making it big. The longer he looks into the murder, the more he realizes that there is much to dig up. This case is more complicated than he thought and new developments make it impossible for him to find out what is really happening in this small village.

During this time, he meets up with the very pretty and charming Olivia. Livy is a breath of fresh air and soon their relationship progresses. The attraction is undeniable, but Alan is not ready for a relationship. The fact that he has to move all over the country to find out what is really happening in this village does not stop Livy and Alan from getting closer. What will happen when the case is solved and Alan has to make a decision about their relationship? Can he give them a chance and see where it leads? Or will he give up and let it all go?

This is my second time reading a Luis Rousset novel and I am very glad because I am now a fan. I actually read the second novel in the Alan Leary series first and I had very high expectations from Mr. Rousset. Reading the beginning of Alan and Livy’s story was really a treat and I got to understand Alan even better. The buildup is great, the plot develops gradually so that the reader has time to start appreciating the story and the characters. The pace is fast and I loved Alan, even though he was a little stubborn, but that just makes him a really good detective and investigator. And the cover is so attractive! In simple words: I loved it!
