Fascinating read regarding one of Britain's most notorious serial killer couples. The author delves into the early lives of Brady and Hindley giving the reader an insight into the couples lives before they met one another and how they operated their heinous acts in later years. A must read for anyone interested in the Moor's Murders and true crime in general.
The Moors Murders were a heinous collection of crimes perpetrated by despicable human beings against innocent children. The author begins this book with a poignant and thoughtful exploration of the pain and damage caused to the mother of one of the victims. This was very important, because the novel focuses on the two perpetrators, and it’s easy for victims to become lost in the process.
Mr. Warren lays out a chronological account of how Ian Brady and Myra Hindley met. Brady’s evil appeared to be a contagious plague that Hindley caught. We are taken through the timespan with details on each passing murder, accompanied by some photos, a transcript of the filmed rape and torture of 10 year old Lesley Ann-Downey, as well as various articles of prison correspondence. Some things were difficult to read, but Mr. Warren did not include any gratuitous material. Whatever facts he presented were there to reveal the heart of Brady and Hindley, not to exploit or shock.
I was quite surprised by the letters between Brady and Hindley after they were imprisoned. Although he was clearly a sadistic psychopath, sexual predator, and seemed to employ coercive control over Hindley, he nonetheless wrote to her as if he deeply loved her. After reading of his callous and brutal crimes, it was quite startling to encounter such a romantic side to him. Not long after we see by his actions that he was just continuing the psychopath’s game of manipulation, false charm, deceit, and self preservation.
This was a thorough and well written account of a shocking and tragic murder. I highly recommend it if you are interested in true crime.
