Motes

Adult; Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror; (Market)

A speck of dust floats in the air, illuminated by a sunbeam. To a daydreamer like Thom Finch, that speck is an imaginary commander leading his army against an equally imaginary foe. The reality is something even Thom’s fertile imagination cannot fathom. He must somehow convince himself, his family and his best friend that his sanity is intact and that what he is seeing is real. The Mu’ahi are tiny in comparison to humans – each one as small as a dust mote. Their planet is isolated in a bubble of space that is desperately bereft of resources. The survival of their race is at stake. They are scavengers searching for treasure over ten light years from home.

Motes by Tilmer L Wright Jr. is a remarkable science fiction novel that combines science, technology, and faith. One late afternoon, while the sun was streaming in through his bedroom window, Thom Finch sees particles of dust floating around in the sunbeam and lets his imagination go wild. Thom has an overly developed imagination and loves to conjure up stories. But this time, what he sees seems like a real living thing rather than something imaginary, and he fears that no one will believe him because of his reputation as a daydreamer and storyteller. Mu'ahi live in the Darj bubble and they worship the Creator, Ro'ini. Unfortunately, the Mu'ahi population's survival depends on the most critical mission in the entire history of their race.

Motes by Tilmer L Wright Jr. is the best kind of science fiction. It's entertaining, revelatory, surprising, and unexpectedly human. The prose is provocative and his world-building is both exceptional and brilliantly realized. I am quite impressed by the author's writing style and his ability to craft a story so fascinating, intense, and believable, especially because it's a debut. Another thing that impressed me was the authenticity of the story's ending. It is a tale of two different worlds that are meant to meet for a divine purpose and the type of reading experience I’d recommend to anyone who is religious but doesn't believe in other advanced civilizations in the universe. This is a writer to watch and the book is well worth the read.
