The story follows seventeen-year-old Adam whose entire life in the troubling state of the country – with its rampant crime, crippling unemployment, and overall social decay – is normal for him after decades of slow decline. It’s a generation into the future, in an America that has robots taking the place of human workers, years of low wages, joblessness and neglect, one where refuse litters the streets, and graffiti is everywhere. Society is collapsing into a nightmare of lawlessness. Buildings and cars are regularly torched, abandoned vehicles littering the roadways, and roving gangs of thieves preying on citizens – a free-for-all for criminals and degenerates. Eager to leave high school and their failing city behind, Adam and his friends are ready for a laid-back summer and start it by heading up to the mountains for a camping trip. But when a violent confrontation with a reconnaissance robot sends them fleeing, they return home to find streets overrun with bots and martial law in effect. Citizens are being forced into transition camps. Anyone caught in the open is pacified and detained; not all of them survive. The teens escape to the underground where they meet a brilliant hacker; together they fight desperately to survive and unintentionally create a resistance that may change the future of the world.
