But Lillian’s carefully maintained equilibrium is upset when a desperate call from her brother lands her back on Broadway and brings her face to face with Tony, the one man she never expected to see again. Assessment:
A big-hearted romantic melodrama with cinematic movements and charming storytelling makes a familiar trope soar. In this well-paced storyline, Lillian (Lily) George, knowing her disquieting past, recognizes the value of her current affluent lifestyle until she unexpectedly reconnects with her first love. Zany secondary characters leap off the pages, while the tension created as Lily decides her future keeps readers holding their breath until the very end and hoping for a sequel.

Readers, do you like a steamy love triangle? If you do read this book. I was so invested in Lily and Tony the entire book, do they get together? I could not guess as to who Lily would end up with. Does Lily stay with her selfish, self- centered, movie mogul husband Charles or does she leave him for her childhood sweetheart Tony? There is so much history between Lily and Tony, at times the book goes between past and present and it was not always a great transition, other than that small criticism it was well written. This is a story with a little mystery and lots of drama. This book is a fast read, nothing too heavy.
This is a wonderful book, both in content and in style. It is almost like a fairy tale yet very realistic and down to earth, so that it is easy to identify oneself with the main characters. All the characters are well-developed and lend support to the development of the plot and the relationship between the protagonists. It is beautifully written, with smooth transitions between paragraphs and a perfect balance between dialogue, interior monologue, and narration. The detailed description of the different environments readily transports the reader to each place and the variation and rich choice of words make the characters and events come to live in a very natural way. There is also a perfect balance in suspense, drama, and intimacy between the main characters, the details of the latter being very subtly and tastefully left to the imagination of the reader. The author does not delve deeply into the psyche of each character, which is refreshingly intriguing, since it gives the reader a chance to form his/her own persona. This is the type of book that one starts to read and hates to put down. I have now added Cathryn K. Thompson to my short list of authors to whose next books I look forward with anticipation.
