THE WIDOW'S PRAYER is the first installment of a planned duology called ONLY THE DYING, based on the author's paternal grandfather, an oil distributor. After losing his father at the dawn of his adulthood, a young man named Walter Brogan moves to a small town in Indiana to marry his fiancé, Greta. There he begins a new life as the proprietor of a small garage, employed by his domineering father-in-law, a successful entrepreneur. Far from the glitz of city life in the Roaring Twenties, Brogan works hard to establish himself among working class Hoosiers, hoping to one day strike out on his own. But there are enemies aligning against his way of life, and the world at large is plummeting unknowingly towards economic peril and global war.
