NYPD detective Alex Boswell joins an elite homicide investigation squad in 1987. He’s intense, neurotic, only thirty, and he’s coming to terms with magnitude of the job. During his first high-profile murder case, he is taken under the wing of Vito Indelicata, a charismatic detective with a storied reputation in uptown Manhattan. At first, Alex sees Vito as a good friend and mentor, but as years and cases pass, he’s drawn into the dark side of Vito’s investigative methods. Vito bribes witnesses, twists forensic evidence, and even threatens Alex, leading him to wonder if some of the people they are putting away for murder are guilty at all. Two decades later, courts have overturned old convictions, and Vito is under investigation for federal civil rights violations. The federal grand jury subpoenas Alex, and he must choose between telling the truth, or covering for Vito like he’s done for twenty years. Ultimately, he decides to testify, but whistleblowing is dangerous, and the consequences to his mental and physical health and to his career will change his life.
