Clay is devastated by the recent murder of Lane as he crosses the Willamette River at midnight to Bardonia where the recently deceased, called Polters, reside. Their way forward has been blocked by a reactionary gang. As he searches for Lane in the land of the dead, Clay meets Ella, a Polter, and together they restore the Polters’ path to destiny. In the end, he must decide whether to go with Ella to wherever Polters go or return to ordinary life.
