Random Shootings
Frank Drury, author

Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

This new novel introduces John Watson, a crime reporter for the Denver Times, and his wife, Diana. We see how they struggle with a cancer diagnosis that has stricken her while she is still a young woman. At the same time, they are confronted with seemingly never-ending episodes of gun violence in their personal lives. Unable to have their own children, they adopt a nine year old boy and a nine year old girl. Their daughter, Trish, loves playing soccer and does very well in school. Their son, Brian, grows up to become a disturbed young man with an uncommon fondness for guns. From mall shootings, school shootings, even military base shootings, this important new book offers a reflection on gun violence in America today and shows the impact it can have on a family.

You can’t get more contemporary, topical, or compelling a read especially after everything that has been happening in the world of gun crime these days. Random Shootings is a story of how lives can be irrevocably changed at any time by a shooting, random or not. Whatever your opinion on gun control or your political affiliation there is something in here for you. Even if just for the vivid characters and seat-of-your-pants plot line. I’ll be checking out more by Frank Drury to see if his other works have as much to offer as this one.

Goodreads

This is a fast paced book that has a lot of action and violence (it is about shootings, after all), but it’s not over the top or gratuitous. There’s no titillating gore, as it is all part of a larger message and storyline that is both important and also relevant in the world we live in. America is very much a gun culture and is deeply divided on the issue. It’s rare that a book can so poignantly capture the whole landscape of the issue at hand, and also put in into context with the emotional ramifications and consequences in the form of relationships and friends/family. A good book and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. (5 stars). Jhonni Parker  Goodreads

Indie Book Reviewers

This is the first book I’ve read from this author Frank Drury, but I enjoyed it very much (even though it’s actually pretty depressing) and I’ll read more of his books now. I like his writing style, it flows nicely and is easy to get lost in. As the story unravels we keep seeing more and more about how guns in our society can cause so much crazy damage and we don’t even really think about it unless it’s on the news, but even then we soon forget. I like that this author wasn’t preachy or judgmental about the issue, but showed both sides people who were for gun and gun ownership, and people who were affected by it and the risks. Recommend. Midwest Book Review

"With a plot that could be taken straight from today's cable news headlines, Random Shootings is a chilling but inherently fascinating read that holds the reader's rapt attention from beginning to end. A deftly crafted and original many-layered novel that is very highly recommended."
