Retribution (The Redemptive Chronicles) (Volume 1)
D.M. Kurtz , author

Adult; Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror; (Market)

It's been well over a hundred years since the last war ended and the King was slain, leaving the people bereft of leadership for the first time in ages. Gradually the knowledge of strange magic, fire-breathing dragons and other powerful creatures has faded, along with much of what was once known of the days when all were united under the royal banner. Now, there are some who whisper of an evil stirring in secret, but most ignore such tidings without any regard for what takes place outside his own borders. Such is the time that Daedrin finds himself, concerned only with building a future with Marin despite the disapproval of his father. But in the midst of peace the whispers prove all too true when his village is attacked, and in the wake of the assault Daedrin solemnly vows to uncover the identity of those responsible. Fueled by loss and blinded by the blood-lust in his heart, can our hero do what he must without becoming the very evil he seeks to destroy?

I loved this book. The characters are really well written and easy to bond with. The story is fast paced so it keeps you completely engrossed and I struggled to put it down. Congrats on a great book and hurry up with the second!!

This is my first of which I hope are many future books by D.M. Kurtz. He is a bright young author that incorporates his faith into his storyline. He doesn't force that faith down but gently places in the characters story.

I like Daedrin, the protagonist of Retribution, the first book of the Redemptive Chronicles. There is a scene in the first chapter where his father basically tells him he will disown him if he joins his friend, Skane, and his girlfriend, Marin, in a quest for adventure. Daedrin is a good, hard working son, but he is also a good friend, and he loves his girlfriend. He does not hesitate to run from the house. He does not hesitate to turn his back on a father who has turned his back on him. Young men have had to have this attitude in order to accomplish something new since the first human societies. Daedrin is a hero and D.M.
Kurtz captures his spirit perfectly.

Besides having a perfectly good hero, Retribution by D.M. Kurtz has some other great aspects going for it. The Redemptive Chronicles will be fantasy on an epic scale and Retribution sets the tale up nicely. The writing is good and the plot is revealed in a timely manner that keeps propelling the story forward. There is great use of foreshadowing, which I like a lot, especially in an epic tale. D.M. Kurtz has a talent for adding just enough foreshadowing to the story without being obvious. The mystical creatures are realistically frightening, and the sense of adventure is balanced with a good sense of danger. All the elements of good fantasy are present in Retribution; magic, mind control, politics, and greed for power. Throw in a few dragons and you have a great book with all the makings of a fantasy classic.
