Rise of the Protector: Fast-paced Sci-Fantasy packed with witty banter and heart.

AT SEVENTEEN, Jinx is doing a below-average job of staying out of trouble. In her defense, being the first and only reject from the Virtual World she was born to enter was a bit of a bummer.

While every other denizen on her space station trains for their future life in the VR (a virtual reality designed for discovering higher wisdom and recording it), Jinx prepares for Galactic Release by shifting her trouble-making into overdrive. When she isn’t sneaking into restricted areas, she’s devising ways to check on, Laris — the only denizen she cares for.

But when the space station’s VR goes into lockdown, trapping Laris and thousands more, Jinx is pulled into a mystery.

Her race to uncover the truth reveals galactic thugs hunting her kind, an annoying zealot undermining her every move, and a hazardous virtual landscape to navigate.

So yeah, Jinx has got her hands full.

Fortunately, she’s got a waggish geek and an ice cream addicted tween AI who’ll risk their backsides to make sure she fulfills her so-called destiny. Not to mention a few new powers that’ll come in handy . . . if she can stay alive long enough to discover them. Fingers crossed she’ll master her inner hero. The survival of Laris, humanity, and all organic life depends on it.

But hey, no pressure. She’s got till the end of the day.

Funny and fun anti-heroine!

Jinx makes an awesome anti-heroine. She cracked me up quite a few times. Worth the read.

loved it!

what a great read - and finally we have a female lead who doesn't devolve into romance! I love Jinx & the other characters as well and really hope there's more coming. And i don't even like serials usually, and i rarely give 5 stars, but this deserves it - great writing, good editing, interesting plot, lots of action without being gross - really good!

love love love

OK, I'm in love with this novel. Not only does it have a kick-ass heroine, but a few awesome geeks, and good role models for young girls. The writing style reminds me, at times, of Rick Riordan. Some parts genuinely made me laugh out loud. And I kept trying to pick my favorite character but there were too many to like. They were relatable. It has a nice balance between humor and real emotional moments.

A YA Tour De Force!

Let me just get this out of the way at the expense of sounding like a broken record: Jinx. Is. Awesome. This book defies the conventions of the Young Adult genre by having an identity outside of anything remotely of its kind. Jinx, however? Some characters in YA are dark, brooding, uninteresting caricatures. Some are transparent, bland, smiling avatars of supposed justice that have no other personality traits other than "righteous." Jinx is real, she's determined, she reacts as any normal person would in the situations she finds herself in, it's all executed so well! She's not an infallible, perfect person that everyone falls in love with within seconds of meeting her. She makes mistakes, she learns and grows, and she'll capture your heart from beginning to end!

I bet you have never been here before!

You gotta love Jinx. She is a kick-ass 17-year-old who lives in a weird future world. Characterization and style are great strengths of this novel, including an ice-cream-loving robot, an improbably-attractive fellow world-saver, and a legendary empath. The novel rates high for originality. On the other hand, there is a lot of repetition and heavy-handed foreshadowing. In this imagined world, the rules of what is possible are unclear, so it feels like the plot is 'anything goes.' There isn't a set of rules and consequences. More like Deus ex machina.

Worth the price of admission!

This book definitely beat my expectations. The author does a great job of catching the reader and reeling them in. I would highly recommend this to readers of this genre and others!

Very enjoyable, fast-paced read that breaks the mold.

The opening pages drop you into Jinx's well-developed and interesting world and the ride just continues from there at a break-neck pace. Don't pause for breath, 'cause you'll miss something. If you're wanting a book that falls outside the mainstream of today's offerings, this is it. The book is thoroughly apt for today's society and I particularly enjoyed the science-fiction-based-in-science aspect.

Truly Entertaining YA Sci-fi.

The main character, Jinx, ends up being rejected from the virtual world on her space station and must prepare for galactic release. Jinx has a thing for Laris, but now she’s leaving. Jinx sneaks into restricted areas and uncovers more than she expected. The real action starts now. If you’re a young adult into science fiction twists and turns, this novel is for you. This was an ARC and I did not receive any type of compensation for reading and reviewing this book.

Well-written, interesting, and intriguing.

I love that the reader is drawn into the book right from the jump, given that there are so many questions to be answered. Why ARE pineal glands being stolen? There is plenty of banter, a nice amount of romance, and lots of mystery to keep you hooked. The main character Jinx is a fantastic protagonist, and makes for a great reluctant hero. With all the thugs hunting her, there is plenty of action, not to mention that she is in the process of developing cool new powers to combat them. I highly recommend this book, it's funny, engaging and always keeps you rooting for Jinx.

This book is a winner – an unusual story and remarkably well-told.

I love the main character of this book, Jinx. She is able to see around corners while most people cannot see outside the box. She has a sense of humor, chutzpah, and persistence. I also loved the science fiction techie aspect of this book, and it was not too complicated to understand. Many books prove to be over my head and I start to get lost. But not this one. There was excellent dialogue and a lot of it which propelled the story at a wonderfully brisk pace. I was interested from start to finish. The pineal gland proved to be a focus for this book which has interested me since my college years when I learned that Descartes falsely attributed free will to it. This book is a winner – an unusual story and remarkably well-told.

A great story, and a great story teller.

Looking forward to the next book

Away we go!

An unmitigated delight!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, the magic, the sci-fi, and all the characters. Plenty of suspense and action to keep you coming back. Very few editing errors. Good Job

I'll be looking for a sequel!

Strong female protagonist in this imaginative and exciting sci-fi adventure where friends got each others' backs. This book kept me totally engaged, and I fervently hope there's plans for a sequel!

A different type of romance.

A great story from the start. I didn’t want to put down. The storyline is unique. The writing brought me into the world without being overly descriptive. It kept a fast pace with just enough world/scene building. I tend to prefer great dialogue over heavy world building, so this was a great pick for me. The dialogue was sharp, funny, and engaging. I’m burned out on the weighty dystopian worlds with stoney characters. It was refreshing to have a meaty story that managed to keep the levity up without losing sincerity. And female characters with wit . . . I say, yes!And while it isn’t a “romance”, there is romantic tension.

Amazon

 Amazing story!

I was hooked from the start. The dialogue is great, with loads of funny moments, and Jinx isn’t your average hero. She admits that she only cares about saving her friend, even though thousands of lives are at stake, and potentially all human/organic life. Of course . . . she evolves. It’s just nice that she’s admittedly flawed.I love Jinx’s eventual-friend, Jacob, the brilliant geek able to hack his way into the high security New World VR. And the equally geek-ified, slightly foul-mouthed, Claire. And then there’s Laris, the embodiment of zen, with a hint of mischievous. The characters are wonderfully deep with actions and dialogue consistent to their character

Jinx- Great character!

Exciting story!I really enjoyed this story, the magic, and all the characters in a sci-fi world. Lots of suspense and action to keep anyone engaged. The story caught you right away and delivered all the way to the end.Well written and lots of fun. Strongly recommend it.

Jinx Rocks!

The sign of a really good book is when you are hooked by the bottom of the first page. Jinx proves to be one of those personalities that you end up caring about... wanting to know what the hell she's going to do next. I found her spirit (with all her flaws and unpredictability), coupled with a deep sense of longing to be love and be loved... an intriguing character. Rounding out all the characters and their quirky personalities (hello, ice cream sandwich anyone?), this author clearly has a keen sense of YA sci-fi. I never felt lost... and genuinely enjoyed her world of twists and turns through time/space, human nature, enlightenment and the technical lingo that only a sci-fi geek could love. I need to know what happens next. Sequel, plea

Heroes generally don’t understand their role. In their mind, they don’t think they’re heroes, they’re just doing what anyone else would do in an emergency. The thing is, though, only a handful of folks will take the initiative, put themselves on the line for a good cause, and save the day. In this book, we have Jinx, a young teenager who’s most definitely a misfit. After all, she’s the first and so far only person who was rejected to enter the virtual world that everyone enters when coming of age. She’s a trouble maker, always has been, and when she finds out her future is “something else”, she kicks that talent into overdrive to prepare herself for the real world outside the space station that’s been home all her life.

Along the way, she discovers that her best friend is now trapped in the virtual world, and appears to be the focus of some sort of prophesy. The supplier of her contraband toys (she’s a “bad” person, remember?) and a rather odd AI also seem to be wrapped up in it, as well. As, much to her astonishment and consternation, she herself appears to be. She’s not sure how to handle this, especially when she starts developing powers she doesn’t understand and can’t control.

Jinx isn’t sure she has it in her to really be a hero. After all, she’s just a kid, and never has fit in. Can she rise to the occasion? Grab this book and see!
