The book makes it clear that there is a profound and indissoluble unity between mankind and the need to help (serve) others. They stress that “service to others” is the foundational vocation of humanity and should be expressed in all areas of our lives. It reminds us that “Every profession involves serving or attending to other people in one-way or another and that we are to ‘love one another’ and provide acts of charity and service to those we encounter each day while protecting against considering ourselves superior to the one we serve in order that the good we do for others will be motivated by a sincere desire to help them and not to receive public adulation or recognition for our assistance.” A case study is included that addresses one's responsibility to “serve others,” especially the poor, and the need for a commitment by individuals, governments, and the church to employ “transformational development processes” in serving others.
