Shlok's Dad: A Father's Perspective of Parenthood
Vivek Sharma, author
What's the difference between motherhood and fatherhood? Motherhood is like learning to drive a car. You start tentatively. Once you get the hang of all gears or buttons, it is all about judgement, or mother’s instinct. Fatherhood, on the other hand, is like sitting on a new roller coaster for the first time. You just sit, holding white-knuckle tight. The ride takes you around turns, bends and loops. All you can do is look around to see if something has fallen, or try to avoid the vomit being hurled all around you. Buckle up and join me as I relate to you my ups and downs, emotional and fun moments; all experienced on the roller coaster ride called parenting. This book is a light read to reassure new parents, nudge wannabe or unsure parents; and for fellow parents to smile over similar experiences of seeing their own offspring grow (puke, stumble, stub toes) and reminisce over losing stuff, sleep, hair, teeth and shit. Beware: I have learnt all I know about being a father from my son, Shlok!

Really well written book, with fast rhythm and informal conversational writing style. Poetic, with a lilt at times. A good author paints a good picture, letting the reader visualize the happenings. One could live the moments in this book. Very relatable as he speaks the universal language of parenthood, with Indian sensibilities. Re-lived my spills and thrills through the pages. Read the whole book with a wide smile on my face.

You will have a constant smile on your face throughout! Vivek certainly knows how to keep you hooked. This is remarkable, because the book isn't a whodunit. It's a simple narration of a father's experiences of seeing his child grow. But Vivek's imagery makes the read akin to watching a movie. He does go overboard with the senti stuff at times, but that's forgivable given how enjoyable the read is.
All the best to Shlok and his dad. We look forward to a sequel in, maybe, a decade?

In this beautiful book, author shared the funny and moving personal tales of his own family life whilst also talking about ups and lows of parenting. Honest, heartwarming and hilarious, his own experiences of fatherhood and the lessons he has learned along the way will resonate with parents everywhere. I felt nostalgic while reading this book.

i bought the Kindle version of the book ( trying to avoid buying paper versions although i am old school ) . Reading through the chapters of this book i relived a number of my memories when my two sons ( my sisters kids) were born and their growing up years . One is 7 and the other is 4 as of today. I was lucky to be with my sis in the labour room when the younger one was born . Reading through what the Author has written i could relate to each emotion and experience described. I have laughed and sobbed through each an every chapter of the book. An amazingly well written book will make all you parents whether old or young relive those special moments when you welcomed your child/children into your life. The author is very gifted in his narrative of the events in his journey as a father and has been able to translate it very well in this book. I am looking forward to more from this Author.

Bite-sized chapters good for quick reads. I think there are some really useful parenting tips embedded in the book, with a lot of humour peppered in to good effect.

The author has done a splendid job and has an impeccable and impish sense of humour. If you are a parent, this book will bring a smile on your face, you will hug your children with a renewed sense of love and belonging.

Goodreads

A very humorous, honest, and insightful look at fatherhood. As a young father of a boy, I’ve already come across many of the same situations as the author and enjoyed reading about what’s to come. Although it describes events in India and Singapore, the truths around being a father are universal. Highly recommend!
