Cort van Breda is the undefeated Ring of Fire world champion. An MMA circuit so deep underground there are no rules and only the winners get out alive. They call him the Sick Heart. They say anyone who sees him fight has to live with the nightmares after. They say he’s a shameless monster, they say he’s a ruthless killer, they say he’s as twisted as the man who owns him. They say a lot of things about Cort van Breda. But in my experience, it’s what people don’t say that counts. In our world violence is money, and money is winning, and winning is life, and life is the only thing that matters. But he wasn’t meant to win that last fight. And I wasn’t meant to be his prize. But he did win. And I am his prize. Sometimes love isn’t a choice, it’s just a set of circumstances. It’s situational, it’s transactional, and sometimes it’s even survival. This is not how I fell in love with the Sick Heart. Even though our story starts out in all those ways.
