Stitches in Time Travel
Some say the past cannot be changed. Well, the past hasn't met Charlotte. Forced by her two moms to spend Christmas at her grandmother's dusty old manor house, 10-year-old Charlotte discovers the impossible: an ancient family quilt that travels through time! Now she's trapped in the past with just a needle and thread and a whole lot of questions. The only people who can help are her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. The problem is that they're 10 years old as well! Will Charlotte make her way back to the present or remain stuck in the past forever? Join Charlotte on this magical, time-travelling, Christmas adventure, where there's more than presents under the tree - there are pasts and futures
Reviews
When 10-year-old Charlotte, who has brown eyes and is cued white, is sent with her four-year-old sister Beatrix to spend Christmas with Mother and Nana, at the slightly rundown, perpetually cold ancestral Gladstone Manor, Charlotte wishes she were with Mom instead. But after Nana’s suggestion to follow tradition and sew a square for the family Christmas quilt results in Charlotte exploring a speculative world centering the quilt itself, Charlotte begins to recognize the value of having family to come home to. Simpson’s cartoon-style b&w illustrations bring the detailed settings and droll characters to life as Charlotte communes with three of her ancestors in turn: the great-grandmother she’s never met, her Nana, and Mother, when they were each 10. Though Charlotte’s internal monologue is skews negative for much of the book, she eventually realizes she is grateful to have met the talented, kind women in her family tree. Seemingly inspired by Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, Reynolds’s fast-paced novella offers a poignant look at family history, heirlooms, and the significance of preserving family stories. Ages 7–12. (Self-published)

Reminiscent of A Christmas Story, yet this story is fresh and contemporary and is perfect for adults as well as children. This holiday offering will activate the imagination and perhaps cause young readers to think about their families, past and future, in new ways. Reynolds combines clever ideas with a heartfelt message that almost anyone can relate to. I especially like the idea of the time-traveling quilt, which is magical in more ways than one and brought back memories of my own grandmother, who made special quilts through the years. Children love the fantastic, and this illustrated book will feed a child's imagination and also touch the heart. It was a neat thing to read about Charlotte being with her 10-year-old mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother again, prompting readers to wonder what it would be like for them if they got to spend time with their ancestors as children. Stitches in Time Travel: A Magical Trip Through Time Kids Book by Peter G. Reynolds could very well be your new Christmas classic and should not be missed.
