"Dermot Davis's Stormy Weather kept me turning pages to see what was going to happen next. Was Robert losing his mind? What was real and what was his imagination and where was this plot going? This author kept me guessing almost to the last page. My favorite character was Allison. She came across as sweet and innocent. The other characters are well done and even the secondary ones add much to the plot without overpowering it. The plot reminded me a wee bit of Dickens' Christmas Carol, Alice in Wonderland, and the Wizard of Oz all rolled into one. The author demonstrates that we often forget the dreams of our youth. We forget what it means to have fun, for we become too wrapped up in adulthood."
"Stormy Weather takes the reader on a journey between the waking world and the dream world, with a detour through Alice in Wonderland. Dr. Robert Munro is a psychiatrist that specializes in dream interpretation. He is the cerebral, analytical therapist that grounds his patients in reality, so when he begins to experience events he cannot explain, he takes his own advice. Over the course of the novel Dr. Munro reflects on his own life experiences, rediscovering his love of music and achieving a new sense of self during his cathartic adventures, to allow himself to heal the rift that has grown between him and his family in the process. Though short, this novel is extremely entertaining and hard to put down. Davis skillfully draws his characters and displays his knowledge of dream interpretation. Stormy Weather is a quick, satisfying read."
With "Stormy Weather", novelist Dermot Davis has deftly crafted a minor literary masterpiece. Fully engaging from beginning to end, this fictional portrayal of the role of dreams with respect to human behavior is as entertaining as it is thoughtful and thought-provoking.
