When you are young and in love, there is no reason to think of death, no matter how inevitable it is.
In SUKI, Dwayne and Savannah are planning their life together when fate throws them an unexpected curve ball. Award winning author, CF Winn, allows her characters their flaws as they face the consequences of their own decisions. The couple is portrayed with humor and honesty as they try to make sense of their imploding world.
The powerful voice of the unlikely narrator allows the reader to be a silent spectator, experiencing the unfolding of each event along with the characters, as if what's happening is going on in slow motion and they are powerless to act—exactly the position in which Dwayne and Savannah find themselves.
SUKI defies all genres. It is an original—a love story, but like none you’ve read before. Its beautifully profound life lessons will change your perspective. We all assume we know what love is, but think again. It comes in many shapes and sizes. If you knew ahead of time that you’d never see “happily ever after “, would you choose to live at all for the sake of love?
SUKI's shocking secret is revealed in a long overdue letter that will make you think about your place and your purpose in this world. The novella delves so deeply into a world rarely talked about, that after the cover is closed, the reader is left with a permanent imprint.
It is a love story, but like none you have ever read before. It has been said that writers tell the same stories over and over. SUKI is an original.I review a lot of books. I almost can't help myself. This is the first time where I wished the entire substance of my review could be a coupon for a free copy of this book. The only way to do it justice is to read it. Twice. Then sit quietly for a while. Then read it again. You will need to plan ahead: put your dog in a kennel, send the kids to Disneyworld, close all the curtains, turn off your phone and disconnect your Internet. There is no way to talk about the book without giving away the compelling originality of the idea or more spoilers than a cheese shop that lost power three days ago. What I can talk about is the powerful storytelling and the emotions CF Winn pulls out of you. There are whole pages of writing in this book that are downright beautiful.Love, tragedy, heartache, and hope. Strap yourself in tightly. This one book has it all. You will not be the same once you read it.
I concur mightily with the five-star reviews and all quotes above.
The writing in SUKI is so sublime, supremely smooth that you fall in love with the love story and never want it to end. But for those, including myself, who don’t read romance novels, this is far from the genre.
The narrator is a very intriguing choice, and one I haven’t read before. I believe that SUKI has created a brand new genre!
It is a love story though. Love has many faces. In reading SUKI, as I was already in love with the characters, there was a point, a very real moment in time when the story become something much more than what it started out to be
SUKI is something that I feel is a life-lesson for all of us, young or old, male or female.
Suki is a beautifully written love story and quite different than any other that I’ve read.
An unlikely and surprising narrator takes the reader through an array of emotions; hope, happiness, excitement, uncertainty, love, laughter, grief, and devastating loss. It takes a brilliant author to write a story that will actually make me cry, and I have to admit, this one did.
What does love really look like? We think we might know, but C.F. Winn shows us that it isn’t always what we expect. The point of view choice in this book is quite original and refreshing.
Suki really touched my heart, and will be with me for a very long time. Thank you, C.F. Winn, for writing such an amazing story.
I've been reading all my life and I've never felt compelled to review any book until now. I first got this book after I was looking for ways to deal with a personal loss. I didn't bring myself to read it until nearly a year later, in the midst of yet another loss. Perhaps that is why this book gripped me as strongly as it did.
I have to be vague, because like the other reviewers, I believe the plot shouldn't be summarized. The story is tragic but bittersweet. The lessons within it are beautifully profound without sounding preachy. By the end, it forced me to reflect on how I express my love, and how I could better appreciate and learn from the people I've loved and loss.
CF Winn has has written a masterpiece. Get Suki, read it, and discover what all 32 of us reviewers are raving about.
P.S.: The short prologue will confuse you, but keep reading. Once you've reached the end, go back, and re-read it. It will hit you like a ton of bricks.
CF Winn's Debut Novella "SUKI" Presents Unique
Perspective on Life, Love, and Destiny
Award Winning Author's highly acclaimed novella applauds the strength of the soul
New York—Drawing on real-life experience, author CF Winn offers a unique perspective on the idea of true love in her debut novella, SUKI.
"After years of watching so many silently experience a level of heartache that few understand, I decided it was time to start a discussion," Winn says. "As a culture, we find certain subjects so painful that they are avoided completely. The story of SUKI comes from emotions previously left dormant, anxiously waiting to hug the soul of anyone brave enough to peek at them."
In SUKI, Winn writes from the point of view that everything happens as it is supposed to by design.
Set in New York, the novella’s unexpected narrator tells the story of Savannah, an independent go getter, who allows fear to keep her from being completely happy, and Dwayne, a softhearted ex-Marine with a talent for creativity. The couple is destined to find each other and carry out a preordained agreement made long before their human feet enter this Earthly plane. Their connection is tangible and their lives easy—until they are presented with one challenge that shakes them to their cores.
The couple's subsequent struggle to make sense of their imploding world comes to a head in the epilogue, where a shocking secret is revealed in an overdue letter.
Throughout SUKI, Winn allows the reader to be a silent spectator, experiencing the unfolding of each event along with the characters. The novella delves so deeply into a world rarely talked about, that after the cover is closed the reader is left with a permanent imprint.
