Sunset Blvd.
My vision going into compiling Sunset Blvd. was centered around the vivid, often all-too-surreal experiences in our youth that we hold closest to ourselves. I broke Sunset Blvd. down into three, cohesive parts: Creation, Obsession, and Transformation. Each chapter has visual design elements that are tailored to their individual theme, with Sunset Blvd. overall designed to slowly approach the understanding & learning that comes with healing, becoming whole again, and finding which parts of yourself you really hold responsibility for after leaving the foggy-headed environment of abuse. Creation starts with some of my youngest writings, in the middle of the worst moments of abuse, and discusses themes of family, connection, and identity, while setting the story off with an air of questioning as to what the future holds. Obsession discusses themes of trauma bonding, hyperarousal/unhealthy coping, unhealthy obsession/infatuation, and emotional burnout/isolation. Many poems & writings in this chapter are heavy with imagery, as this is meant to feel like a saturated, detailed, intimidating world that the reader is thrown into after such innocent, earnest beginnings. Transformation discusses themes of personal growth, learning tenderness with oneself, unlearning habitual wrongdoings, putting energy towards what’s best for yourself, and finding comfort in your chaotic past. I wanted this chapter to completely finalize the previous works, and tie up any strings that were still remaining in the Blvd. I describe Sunset Blvd. best as, "Sunset Blvd. is a collection of dreams, a diary, a confidant of my youth. A place that held all of my older wounds to be healed at a later date. My late-night frenzies, my endless mind-f*cks. After 6 years of writing, living, growing, and creating, Sunset Blvd. is a project packed with the gruesome, vivid, exasperating experiences we interact with as we grow from childhood. The sudden surge of the 'big bad world’ catching on the back of your heels. This place was only mine for so long. Now, I relinquish this world to you."
