JAXX AT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA is a delight! It leaves you with the warm, caring feelings that emanate off its pages. As a retired elementary teacher, I immediately saw it as an "I Can Read" book for second and third graders. Those older will enjoy it, too. And parents, or siblings, will have fun reading it to younger children. Ms. Doster has astutely divided JAXX into chapters that can be easily handled in one sitting. Each chapter offers a variety of ideas, information, and human sentiments and behaviors for teaches and parents to use in stimulating discussion with JAXX's readers. I see the book as also leading to creative writing, music, and art projects. Why not an integrated social studies unit? I applaud Ms. Doster's incorporation of easy, common French phrases, accompanied by an appended English translation dictionary. All in all, Joanna Lee Doster has given us a small book large with riches to be mined by young developing readers.
