Assessment:
Plot/Idea: Deiterich's novel is a fast-paced read that will be enjoyable for both young readers who love horses and those who like tales of perseverance. Indefatigable, "Indy" for short, strives to become a winning racehorse and it is easy to root for her and her team as they face different challenges along the way.
Prose: Though Deiterich's style of writing is geared toward a younger audience, her prose is polished and enticing. Older siblings or parents should be able to connect with the storytelling as well. Deiterich also does an amazing job at making the horse races come alive, describing the action in a riveting manner.
Originality: While there are a lot of middle grade books about horses, the protagonist in many of them is the young human--often girl--riding the horse. In the case of Deiterich's novel, a young female horse is the main character and, refreshingly, the readers view the story through her eyes.
Character/Execution: Deiterich has painted a dynamic cast of characters with distinct voices, from the horses to their human handlers. Readers are enabled to connect and care about each one of them, namely the ones with tender hearts, such as Indy's jockey Juan Pablo. Deiterich also beautifully conveys the growth that takes place over Indy's journey to success, which is largely shaped by mentorship from her lead pony and best friend Henry
