Mix together murder, lost treasure, secret societies, Nazis, and a dash of romance, and the result is an intriguing and suspenseful tale of betrayal and hope. Depicting a fictional account of true historical events, Gil Cope’s novel, The Amber Conspiracy, contains all these ingredients and much more.

Ultimate dedication to a cause has the explosive potential to go terribly wrong, especially when the morality behind it, as well as the intentions, are questionable at best. Jack Monroe, The Amber Conspiracy’s hero, and his lethal patrner Kira find this out the hard way as they traipse from one end of the world to the other on a deadly trail of classified secrets. The pair has two goals. The first is to find the legendary Amber Room, which will hopefully lead them to their second goal of finding out who killed Kira’s grandfather and Jack’s good friend, Urie Roskopf.

The Amber Room, known as the 8th Wonder of the World, was a real room; hand crafted of rare, intricately carved amber, and gifted to Peter the Great of Russia, who then passed it on to his daughter Catherine. During World War II, the room disappeared and has never been found. Cope ties the room’s true history with the fictional premise that the Amber Room was suspected by many to have a ceremonial purpose for the Illuminati, a group so secret that some question its very existence.

This historical mystery serves as the backbone of The Amber Conspiracy.  Throughout the book, historical passages portraying the saga of the Illuminati, the Amber Room, and a sacred relic are interspersed with the present day storyline. The beginning of each chapter is clearly marked as to date and location, which helps to keep the confusion to a minimum. I would have liked to see a bit more continuity between the historical passages, since they jump from era to era without telling what happens in between. But all in all these segments provide rich details which make Jack and Kira’s ordeal even more interesting.

When Jack and Kira finally arrive at the climax of their dangerous mission, what they discovery is even more astounding and horrifying than they could have imagined.

The Amber Conspiracy is both thrilling and fascinating in its historical depth. The story – both the true account and the fictional version told in the book - is truly one of epic proportions. From the Inquisition to Nazi Germany to a corrupt present day Nigerian government, Cope spins an intricate story of grand scope that manages to sustain its focus and keep readers guessing until the very end.

The Amber Conspiracy by Gil Cope begins with a backstory presented in the prologue about a sacred relic which is protected by an ancient priest during Constantinople’s crusades of the 1200’s. The story then begins in current times with Chapter One in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as Jack Monroe is doing a presentation of his research on the Amber Room. The Amber Room was supposedly built in Prussia around the 1700’s to hold a valuable ancient relic.

The goal of the Amber Room’s builders was to keep the relic away from the Vatican. When Monroe’s presentation is over, he skips the cocktail hour at the museum and rushes to meet his mentor and friend, Urie Roskopf, at a café on the corner of Dakotas and 72nd Street. Monroe arrives early and as he is waiting he sees a cab run over his friend, killing him instantly. When he runs out to help him, a woman, Kira, Urie’s granddaughter and former Israel agent), comes out of nowhere and shoots the cab driver who was already aiming his machine gun at Monroe. They both recover Urie documents and escape the scene to a hotel where they realize that within the Urie’s documents there is a piece of amber from the Amber Room. This is just the beginning of a page turning story which will take the reader through an amazing adventure as the author presents the story of the relic parallel to the conspiracy unraveling in current times.

Gil Cope has put together in The Amber Conspiracy a very interesting plot as he narrates the story behind the relic, and its journey through time. He also created a suspenseful thriller as Jack Monroe and Kira try to solve Urie’s murder at the same time that they find themselves getting deeper within the Illuminati and the Amber Room conspiracy. Cope’s writing is impeccable. The pace is perfect, and the characters well developed. It hooked me from the beginning to end making this book very difficult to put down.

I definitely give “The Amber Conspiracy” by Gil Cope five stars and highly recommend it to all adventure, mystery, and suspense lovers. I can hardly wait to see what stories Gil Cope comes up with next!

Caught in the maze of mystery, Jack and Kira are being pursued by the guardians of a sacred secret. Will they uncover the mystery of The Amber Room, or will death take its toll?

Gil Cope writes an epic cloak and dagger thriller. The Amber Conspiracy takes you back into history and then catapults you into the present. Cope easily fluctuates back and forth in time, chronicling the journey of the relic and the location of the Amber Room. The vast array of characters, past and present, were easy to visualize; they were described with intricate precision.

The historical accuracy of the Nazi regime, Knights Templar, and the origins of the Free Masons gave foundational depth to the plot scheme. Full of action, sensory descriptions and on the edge adventure, The Amber Conspiracy reads like a motion picture. As the plot develops, it broadens, taking you down many curious pathways before it ultimately narrows into its climax. By not disclosing the true nature of the relic, Cope keeps the reader curiously engaged in the mystery. He waited to reveal the truth until the pinnacle of the plot. Descending the falling action of the story, I was pleasantly surprised with The Amber Conspiracy’s clever ending.
