The Chronicles of Ethan Grimley: Path to Victory
Lissa Dobbs, author
Twelve-year-old Ethan Grimley is just like everyone else in Land's End. He attends school at the Arcana Maximus, he helps out in his mother's bakery, and he hangs out with his friends. But when Ethan meets a stranger, one who seems to know him, his life spirals into a tangled maze that he doesn't know how to traverse. Hunted by those who want to know his secret and plagued by a family tragedy he doesn't remember, Ethan must now choose between the life he's always known and the life he's always wanted to live.
Reviews
Goodreads

This was a fun read. We have a very young lad, Ethan Grimley, living in a medieval-type world, helping his mother out at her bakery, and trying to go to school and hang out with his friends.

All of that changes one day when he meets a mysterious stranger who tells him about the Shadow Walkers. I'm not going to give away the plot of the story. Rather, just say that I thought it a good read, old-fashioned in the very best sense of the word. Ethan is somewhat small for his age (12) but has big dreams, is a dutiful son, but he's not afraid to stand up for himself, and it was fun to watch him mature over the course of the novel. The other characters were sharply defined as well, and all were rather likable.

I've heard this will be a series of books. If so, then it should be a good one. Recommended.
