The Cinematics Club: A YA Noir
Life is NOT a movie…until the new blue-eyed boy at school walks into your film club. Set in 1985, the first book in a trilogy is a YA Noir for teens (and adults who love the 80s). Mixing teen first love with cool, cutting edge style and suspense, the story comes to life through the fashion, movies, and music of the period. Sophie Alexander, a 16-year-old girl in the Los Angeles suburbs, starts a filmmaking club with her friends at Noble High. Everyday life for her—high school and a part-time box office job at La Luna movie theater—changes when the new boy at school joins the Cinematics Club. While making their spy movie, Sophie is drawn into unravelling the secret of a mysterious, WWII film reel found at La Luna. The search for the truth will lead Sophie and her friends into a dangerous mission on the most anticipated night of the year—the Noble High Halloween dance. She will be challenged to confront painful family history. Will she rise to uncover the truth and is the new boy she falls for what he really seems? The world of imagination and life collide in this tale, filled with twists and turns, of how a group of friends can be the heroes of their own story.

The Cinematics Club is a fun read that captures the 1980s The Cinematics Club begins as a sprightly novel that highlights a group of 1980s advanced placement high school students – all of whom are the children of immigrants from Europe, Africa, and Asia/SE Asia. Through their love of film, they create The Cinematics Club and write and film their own spy movie. This story evokes the 1980s, especially the 1980s in Los Angeles, California, both visually and musically, along with important trends in fashion and food.Author Renee Windman's skillful use of art, fashion, food and music is a fun exploration and loving depiction of 1980s LA, especially through the eyes of Sophie Alexander, a teenager who also loves art, fashion, music and especially movies. She works a part-time job at the La Luna movie theatre. However, The Cinematics Club takes a sinister turn in the middle of the novel, when its members discover a dark secret, and race to uncover and capture a villain from the past, whose haunting crimes resonate into the 1980s.Readers of all ages will find much to enjoy in this story, not the least of which are the depictions of life among 1980s teenagers on Ventura Boulevard in "the Valley" of Los Angeles, CA.Also refreshing is the portrayal of smart, high-achieving teenagers who juggle strenuous academic courses with part-time jobs, manage their overprotective parents with aplomb, and experience all the regular teen activities (and angst) of friendships and budding romances. The Cinematics Club is a fun and interesting read!

AN OUTSTANDING MUST READ FOR YOUNG ADULTS AND NOT SO YOUNG ADULTS ALIKE. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Renee Windman’s “The Cinematics Club: A YA Noir” is a rare treat and destined to be a YA phenomenon. It’s a diverse representation of the ethos of LA in the 80’s from the eyes of a young girl, but with much more to the story than one would expect.Throughout the book you are transported back in time on a journey of art history, fashion, iconic neighborhoods, and cult classic movies, not to mention musical references that will make you want to create a playlist and follow along with the vibe. If you did not grow up in LA, this book offers a glimpse into what that was like and perhaps even make wish you had! The author weaves the heart and soul of LA vibes into a youthful romance, mystery, and daring adventure that both captivates and leaves you wanting more!
