THE COOL THING is fun, ribald, and frequently hilarious. It won't be for everybody, but you can say that about a lot of great writing. It has a pitch-black sense of humor with a unique presentation. The concept of the breastplate/extender is terrific, as are the concepts of the Waydowns , the Spills, and the lab, ultimately creating this crazy, detailed fictional universe that's fun to run around in.
