Assessment:
Plot/Idea: In this well-structured story, unexplained eruptions, unrest, and a deadly tree fungus are threatening the kingdom of Tellidus. Princess Nienna Comstock, a skilled cartographer, is called on to investigate the causes of the land’s instability, but she soon unearths a slew of secrets and dangers that put even her own life at risk. That journey is just the start for Nienna, who eventually discovers her true purpose—and the power she holds to save her world. Thurgood offers readers plenty of action alongside meaningful character development, and the storyline is engaging throughout.
Prose: Thurgood writes polished prose that emanates mystery and wonder. The worldbuilding is extraordinary, with a solid history built into the storyline to anchor the setting.
Originality: This story teems with fantasy elements and a breath of historical fiction in places as well; time travel, unexplained magic, and romance all combine to make this a truly original read.
Character/Execution: Nienna, a reluctant princess, is desperate for meaning in her life beyond marriage and fancy dresses. Her intelligence and depth are skillfully rendered, and her relationship with Tellen sizzles. The cast is large but easy to track, and not everyone is who they appear to be on the surface—a strategy that gives the characters a decided edge.
