The Final Dawn: A debut novella of revenge, betrayal and treacherous love.
In Joseph Stalin’s early 1930’s Russia, an entire class of people were at risk of exploitation. Valeyria and Alexei Yolkin were members of one such family. …. It was a freezing day when the first Yolkin sibling turned on another. With the young children listening in fear below in the darkness, they heard their uncle Eduard giving orders to kill their mother and father. The only girl, Valeyria aged just seven, had a sudden desire for revenge, it consumed her. She hated her uncle Eduard and she wanted him to die – by her hands, if she could. But would her thirst for revenge, lead her to her final dawn and cloud her judgement? Will she take it too far and turn on those she is supposed to love?

The Final Dawn by Alice Catherine Carter is a short but very powerful and interesting story about the historic time period of the early 1930s when Stalin ruled Russia. The Final Dawn is about the life story of Valeyria and Alexei Yolkin. Three young children hidden in the basement hear their Uncle Eduard give the order to shoot their parents. When they are found several days later, one boy is dead. Valeyria, though only seven, sets her life on a course of revenge while her brother Alexei just hopes to survive and get on with his life. Valeyria plots and plans for many years and wants nothing more than to be able to kill both Stalin and her Uncle Eduard. Alexei, after making the wrong friends and bad decisions, soon realizes that he would also like to have a hand in killing Stalin.

The Final Dawn is a gripping story that will hold your attention from the very first word until the chilling conclusion. Alice Catherine Carter has written her first novella with professional insight and detailed skill. The Final Dawn has a little of everything: murder, love and hate. Carter has given the reader a very real and truthful feel for the way Stalin would have ruled over both the country and his family.  Carter delivers a brilliant ending that ties all of the pieces together in a perfect bow. This is a must-read. I am anxiously awaiting Alice Catherine Carter’s next book.
