Set in Gloster, Mississippi, the novel follows the story of an African American man, Russell Billy Johnson, coming from humble beginnings to his rise to the position of mayor. Following the buy-out of the company they worked in for fifteen years, Russell and other workers are laid off. The death of an African American logging truck driver follows, which throws the town into speculation. More is to follow as the chief of police goes missing and the current longtime mayor commits suicide. Amidst the mayhem, newly elected Alderman, Russell Johnson is thrust into politics and shortly later, is appointed mayor to fill the leadership vacuum left by the former mayor’s death.

Being an ordinary citizen, Russell understands the issues faced by the residents of the town and he is determined to transform the lives of the people. Sudden events in the plot increase suspense as complex networks of crime are revealed. The characters are well-developed and interesting which pulls the reader further into this extraordinary story. Author, C. Anthony Sherman is an exceptional writer and inspiring storyteller which readers will soon discover when they read The Governor’s Appointment.
