The Maddening resides on the dark edges between gothic horror and the psychological thriller, a chilling tale that intersects the lives of three characters bound by murder, madness and fate. Foremost is “Poe” a serial killer who sees himself as a living manifestation of the famous writer. He is born Daemon Ultrecht, a troubled child who later transforms to “Poe,” penning stories born from his murderous exploits. PJ Bones, a disgraced former NYPD detective, is a best-selling author that seeks to “right the world” through his fictional alter ego, “Sam Rock.” Bones, however, copes with past demons that continue to haunt him. His life becomes more complicated upon meeting and falling in love with the enigmatic Clara Knox, only to plunge helplessly with her decent into madness. Clara Knox has come to New York City from her small town in Kansas. Her idyllic student life, though, is shattered when she finds Poe lying in wait. She manages to survive the horrific attack, a brutality that scars her body but inflicts even deeper psychological wounds. Driven by passion, rage and revenge, she finally confronts the monster that has destroyed her life. There is only one escape from “the maddening”—a reckoning that she herself must deliver.
