The Magical Christmas Tree
L.M Haynes, author
El Capit á n is the fictional story of an immigrant family with three young boys arriving in the United States to find their Opportunity. There are many kinds. It's why people cross those borders; leaving home; leaving behind what they know. Often you don't get to know what kind of opportunity until you're committed, and you can't go back. Mario Center, "Rio", at eight is the middle child. He dreams of soccer, finding his opportunity when he interrupts the "Maestros" playing a game of football. These "maestros" are former soccer pros that meet on Saturdays to play and everyone knows to leave them alone. Everyone, that is, except Rio. Rodrigo, "Rigo", his older brother finds an opportunity making twenty bucks from two "dudes in a black Lincoln" who promise him "more from where that came from." The Center family, including the youngest, Miguelito, are starting from the bottom of the ladder. They are in a homeland that is not theirs. They want to belong to something. And eventually, they will. Rio finds that soccer is his way. Rigo takes another path, the path of fast money and the dreams of being his “own man.” Their two paths will meet, Rio and Rigo, brothers on a collision course. Along the way we discover the little stories, the friendships and mentoring, coaching and teaching that develop the mind and skills of the young futbolista.
