The Mender
Mender EVA, a true believer in the cult of LUX LIBERA, has dedicated her life to merging the multiverse’s reality into the one True timeline. Partnered with fellow assassin TOPHE, she travels through time and space to complete missions for her organization, often thwarting the good deeds of history’s heroes. Highly skilled in martial arts, culture, and languages, Eva and Tophe boast an unblemished record of success and hope to be promoted to new leadership positions. Tasked with a new mission, Eva and Tophe are accidentally separated during their journey. Eva sustains a head injury and finds herself stranded in the right place, but the wrong time: 1835 Tejas y Coahuila. JIM, a discontented former Comanche captive, discovers Eva on his property and nurses her back to health. As Eva recovers, she worries she has permanently lost her ability to travel. She pitches in on Jim’s farm, earning her keep while pretending to have damaged memories of who she is. Since his unexpected return to Anglo society, Jim has made a good-faith effort to establish himself in the community as a farmer, but his heart remains with his adoptive family’s nomadic way of life. Despite believing Jim is only a Fated shadow of the True line and having taken a vow of celibacy, her growing friendship with Jim deepens to an undeniable attachment. Eva’s love for Jim forces her to question everything she has been taught to believe about the nature of reality. Eventually, she confesses who and what she really is. Though she will face execution for apostasy if discovered, Eva renounces her faith to marry Jim. When the wealthiest plantation in Austin’s Colony is raided and the owners murdered, Jim and Eva flee to Jim’s Comanche village, avoiding a vengeful mob, and in the process, find their true home.
