REVIEW
‘I used this book during reading time with our preschool children at Headstart who are ages 3 to 4. They thoroughly enjoyed the story. They loved it as they recognized that Tasse made mistakes, but Carmen still loved Tasse even despite making mistakes. The children related and took comfort in knowing that they too make mistakes, but their parents still love them despite these! The children also really loved the pictures in the book!’
REVIEW
‘This is an autobiographical picture book that introduces children to the life of an older adult through the eyes of her small dog. Written in first person, Tasse the dog explains to children all the things that make up her day: barking at passersby, going for walks, getting treats, and napping in the sun. Throughout the book, her owner, Carmen, says "Oh, Tasse, you are a Monster Dog but I love you!" as she gently and kindly sets limits, cares for, and enjoys her pet. Tasse expresses opinions and thoughts in the book, but is not overly anthropomorphized--she always clearly remains a dog, with dog goals.
The full-page color illustrations on every spread add to the gentle tone and narrative, capturing Tasse the small dog in her everyday activities in a way that helps children feel that while Tasse is the center of the story and the pictures, there is always Carmen nearby as a companion and caregiver.
Excellent choice for read-alouds with preschoolers and a delightful choice for families who love dogs and want to encourage empathy. As Tasse herself says, "Life is not always easy for grown-ups."‘
