The New Holy Warriors
The day after 9/11 a young Mexican-American attorney just out of UCLA law school gets a phone call at his office in Beverly Hills from a family friend who is president of Doctors Without Borders. Marc Bravo, the protagonist, has a father (Rodrigo) who is a noted plastic surgeon. He does volunteer work at a medical clinic in a rural Mayan Indian village outside Mexico City. His wife Sally, a registered nurse, always goes with him. Both are reported missing on September 12. The head of Doctors Without Borders suspects the Mexican Mafia may have kidnapped the couple for ransom monies. Fearful his folks are in danger, Marc takes a red-eye flight out of LAX to search for them. Clueless as to what transpired, he befriends a Mexico City cab driver who helps him find the only eyewitness to the crime. A ten-year-old Mayan kid. Marc ends up leading a UN-sponsored search and rescue mission (he is a National Guard reserve captain). It turns out his folks were abducted by an Al-Qaeda sleeper cell jihadist and friend of Osama bin Laden, mastermind of the 9/11 attack on the NY Trade Center. Will Marc find his parents before they get beheaded? Will he be able to stop nefarious terror activities planned by the evil Sheik (antagonist): Sequel to follow. The book is written in a visual style and structure to be easily adapted into a movie. 409 pages Cliffhanger that takes place in 7 countries (globe hopper).
