The Open Book: A Family Memoir of Adventure, Trauma, and Resilience
The Open Book: A Family Memoir of Adventure, Trauma, and Resilience is a tale in which love and forgiveness triumph. The story began fifty years ago when two young dreamers built a life together on an off-grid homestead in the Belizean jungle. When a hurricane destroyed everything they had worked so hard to create, it was tempting to give up––but they persisted and thrived, until their family fell apart under mysterious circumstances. Thirty years later, their daughters set out to find the truth of what happened. In The Open Book, multiple voices are woven together to provide a unique portrait of one family’s wild-but-true experience from four different perspectives. This honest and uplifting story celebrates the strength of women, the power of love, and the resilience of the human spirit.

This book is truly thought provoking, engaging, and well written. As I read I felt like I was actually in the environments that were described- smelling the smell of the ripe mangos, hearing the streams ripple, and feeling the bare ground of Belize under my feet. The imagery is rich and captivating and the story, equally so. It’s one of those books you keep thinking about long after you finish reading it. I finished it in 3 sittings as I could not put it down! I commend these three women for bravely sharing their story in a raw and beautiful tone. It is full of honestly, pain, and healing, and highlights the fact that those we love dearly have experiences, thoughts, and feelings that sometimes need the healing that time and experience brings before those things can be shared.
