The Privilege of Men

Adult; Mystery/Thriller; (Market)

The Privilege of Men is a thriller about the use and abuse of women and animals and the reflection on a culture of men that condones both. When money is involved, men will use anything and anybody for their privilege. It is an international tale of greed and horrific inhumanity toward girls, women and animals; an allegory where women are a metaphor for animals. It is a searing indictment of the international status quo and the inability of weak institutions and individuals who are unable and unwilling to change mindsets that propagate these crimes and injustices. The insensitivity shown toward animals is a direct reflection of a culture in its treatment of women. The relationships between men, women and animals can be reprehensible, especially when the mistreatment of women and animals coincides with ego and money. The underlying message is universal, resonating across borders and species.

5.0 out of 5 stars The inhumanity of humans

Readers of Judith Mazzucco’s novella The Privilege of Men will deem it no exaggeration to describe the story she has crafted as a stunning, shocking and brutal rendition of man’s inhumanity to man. While she grew up and still lives on a farm in rural New Jersey, there is nothing bucolic about the farm featured in her book, just as there is nothing bucolic about George Orwell’s masterpiece Animal Farm. To the contrary, it is easy to speculate that she has fictionalized reality, that such places as she describes actually exist, and that we humans may not be nearly as civilized as we think.

This book is thoughtful and provoking and is on the mark with issues we face today. It is well written, a compelling story by a woman who is not afraid to bare the truth and reach deeply into a person's soul and motivation to do unspeakable harm to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very worthwhile read

The author tells a story that is eye opening. She takes us on a journey to foreign lands and gives insight into a horrible situation. She develops characters that are relatable and recognizable. This helps to put ourselves into a situation that is hopefully foreign to us. By making the characters recognizable, we can perhaps see the motivations for the atrocities. A human face is put on an inhuman situation. I highly recommend this book!
