The Shatter Point
Jon O'Bergh, author
Everyone has a breaking point. That is the premise of "The Shatter Point," a ghost story wrapped inside a thriller. Weaving layers of truth and fiction, the story challenges the reader’s sense of reality with unexpected twists and turns. Jada Mercer is used to getting her way, and she loves danger. When she meets Asher Williams, a sensitive musician in a band, she pressures him to prove himself through the rigors of an extreme haunt known as Horror Place. At the same time, the haunt’s owners, Phil and Donna Woods, are locked in an escalating feud with neighbor Ruth Littleton. The past intrudes in unwelcome ways for each character. Donna remains troubled by a previous marriage that turned sour when the husband became abusive. Her son Billy fears that he inherited his father’s propensity toward violence. Feelings of inadequacy haunt Asher from his years being bullied. Ruth hides a series of traumatic incidents from her youth. Jada’s craving for stimulation leads eventually to disaster. In a world haunted by the ghosts of the past—where reality is manufactured for popular consumption—how do we know what is real and what is fake, what is true and what is imagined? After the shatter point, the horror will become all too real.

The Shatter Point is a slow burn of a dark thriller intermixed with paranormal and supernatural leanings, ghosts that appear only at the corner of the eyes. O’Bergh cleverly brings this suburban gothic into the twenty first century by blending social media with prose, present anxieties with recurring past traumas, and complex characters. Given that much of the plot is centered around Youtube videos and the glory that comes from impressing thousands of strangers online, or the shame of not impressing them, the story needed social media and the type of commenting that comes with it and O’Bergh was able to capture – usernames and all – the vitriol and one-upmanship that comes with it… I would recommend this book for anyone looking for an intriguing and modern urban thriller. The Shatter Point readily provides believable characters, complex relationships and twists that will leave your jaw on the floor.

This is my first time reading the author. I really enjoyed The Shatter Point, much more than I expected to. This book is more of an intense suspense novel with paranormal overtones. The characters were well-written and really come to life. I like the way the novel is structured with each chapter focusing on multiple characters. The story builds slowly and becomes more and more intense as the characters become entangled in each other’s lives. The book is quite dark at times, especially towards the end when more and more sinister events befall the characters. I loved the concept of Horror Place, the extreme haunt attraction that becomes so disturbingly central to the characters and their lives. I liked the mix of characters. Even though some, such as Jade as unlikable I still enjoyed reading about them. The shocking ending completely floored me. The Shatter Point is well worth a read.

This book is a work of art. It’s a fantastic ghost story, it’s a fascinating look into a suburban community with too many secrets, and it has that perfect thriller pacing and reveals to keep you hooked. I’d have never guessed it looking at the cover and synopsis, but let me tell you, it’s all there. The characters throughout this book are handled so well. There are quite a few that come up regularly, but they’re all well developed and unique, and I never had to go back and try to figure out who anyone was. Even the minor characters are handled well, without feeling tedious or like we were just reading a character study. The pacing and the reveals throughout the book are brilliantly done and perfectly timed. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, some other wrench gets thrown into the mix… All in all, this book is fantastic, and definitely one you’re going to want to be picking up come October. If you enjoy stories that focus on societies and the people within them, ghost stories, being scared, or thrillers, you should definitely check out The Shatter Point.

Jon O’Bergh’s contemporary horror novel, The Shatter Point, is a taut and absorbing psychological thriller that takes a chilling look at the things that make people snap… O’Bergh explores the darker aspects of social media: the obsession with followers and likes, and the manipulation of others in pursuit of social media fame. The actual videos made of the Horror Place visitors seem mild when compared to the viciousness of the comments they evoke when posted. The Shatter Point sparkles with dark energy, which seems to emanate from a quiet, tree-lined suburban street whose underlying forces are ignited with one fell swoop. O’Bergh’s plot is intricate and twisty, and his characters are credible and, sometimes, downright scary. The Shatter Point is most highly recommended.

In Shatter Point by Jon O’Bergh, the town of Pasadena is the haunting backdrop to this tale of feuds, dangerous dares and horror stories of the past… If you enjoy a story that has twists, turns and surprises throughout, then The Shatter Point by Jon O’Bergh is a perfect book for you. The way the writer has woven such detail into his characters and story lines is amazing. Each character is well constructed, especially the violent Billy and manipulative Jada. The author is a master of suspense that is so realistic it touches every one of your senses and gives you haunting goosebumps. A superb story from start to finish with tension, excitement, and thrills throughout. The occurrences in Ruth’s house were truly spooky… When I thought I knew what was going to happen, the author would take me in another direction. This is a perfect story for anyone who likes a good horror and whodunit mystery.
