"Harry Potter meets Die Hard" - M. Bybee, WereBooks.org

A world once at the height of magical technology and social order has collapsed. How and why are the least of the wizard killer’s worries.

Leaning my bloody head against the back of the crashed levitating carriage, I flex my cramped fingers. With a renewed grip on the mana-pistol, I steal a quick breath. The others better wake up fast, otherwise we’re all going to burn.

The Wizard Killer - Season One: A Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy Serial is a collection of serial episodes written by Adam Dreece. After finishing his debut science fiction novel, the author decided to begin a series that he would post online. To his surprise, his serial began to attract a following of devoted fans who would wait for each of the twenty episodes that he posted each week. While the stories in this collection have been professionally edited for publication, they are to all extents and purposes the twenty episodes in the form that they appeared on his website. His character is a wizard-killer who lives in a strange, post-apocalyptic world where magical ability is crucial for survival. When we first meet him, he's in a weakened state and in a lot of pain, which he discovers has been caused by his short sword being impaled in his stomach. His sword is a magical instrument, but the mana he needs to work magic is in scant supply. As he tries to remove the sword, he realizes that he doesn't really have any memories of the recent past, and that his surroundings have suddenly become very strange to him. Each episode follows him as he navigates the post-apocalyptic landscape he inhabits.

Adam Dreece's post-apocalyptic fantasy for young and new adults, The Wizard Killer - Season One: A Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy Serial, is an imaginative and compelling series that is quite difficult to stop reading. Dreece knows exactly how to build and then neatly tie up each episode, while leaving the reader wanting more. They work beautifully together and build the wizard's world piece by piece. The endings, while not blatantly cliff-hangers, did make me reluctant to stop reading until I had read each of the twenty episodes in the series. I was very impressed by his story line and his writing. I loved meeting the strange and sometimes terrifying beings that inhabited Dreece's post-apocalyptic vision and will be checking his blog for the second season of the series. The Wizard Killer - Season One: A Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy Serial is highly recommended.
